Function might be independent from the landscape, not aesthetic. The declivity of the ground, « towards a lower level » when one comes from town, is a problem if one considers this is an equipment that supposedly structures the landscape, and therefore must be a landmark .
We have dismissed the option of a building that would be aligned with the public road: it would have been too urban for the existing scenery, it would have forced the cars towards the back of the building, therefore imposing the necessity of creating two entrances (surpervision and symbolism being mixed here).
A vast square, just in front of the building, will allow the visitor, looking from above, to assess the importance of the building, the roof becoming therefore the fifth façade.
The use of this equipment for festive events of a thousand persons or more, the overtime that activities such as danse and judo would imply has forced us to offer a hall that is much wider than what the programme was requiring. The compact dimension of the whole center and the woven structure has allowed us to do so without putting a strain on the budget : it was only a question of adding few standard square metres.
In the centre of this hall, there is a hole that links visually both levels, creating an event along the stairs , with a rip-rap wall and a garden below: the trunks being visible from below, and the foliage from above. It should be possible, even without being a very skilled gardener, to grow exuberant tropical plants there.
Each sports room gets its light from the north. The dancing rooms get light form both north and south: there are slatted awning on the façade to prevent the rooms from too much direct light. Since the roof is built with strips that are out of line, it allows for the northern light to come in unexpectedly, as well as the eastern and western light, therefore creating a play of shade and light, evolving according to the time of the day.
